The Green Mile (1999) “The Green Mile,” based on the novel written by my favourite author, Stephen King, follows Paul Edgecomb, the head guard of a prison. There, he meets a Black inmate accused of killing two girls, but after meeting him, Paul realises he’s not the monster people claim he is. Instead, he discovers that John possesses an extraordinary and almost otherworldly gift which makes Paul’s life change drastically, which challenges Paul’s understanding of justice, morality and humanity. I tried to keep as spoiler-free as possible. I like this movie because it portrays racism and discrimination against Black people in a raw and emotional way how cruel people can be and how easily society chooses to believe the worst about someone just because they’re different, and it also shows how cruel humans can be. I watched this movie alone during lockdown, and I am gonna tell you it made my eyes bawl because of how sad it was to see how poorly a kind-hearted person was treated just because of the colour of his skin and how guilty people sometime walk free and innocent suffer for trying to do the right thing if you are truly looking for a movie that makes you cry out loud then its one of those movies because it made me cry out loud. its a sad movie 2. The Pursuit of Happiness (2006) This movie is a biopic of Chris Gardner, an American businessman and motivational speaker. The movie tells about the hardship of a father as he was homeless before becoming a businessman—the story of a father who will do anything for his son and tries to make ends meet so that he can give his son a good life. Chris takes up an unpaid internship in a brokerage firm because he loses his life’s earnings on a product he invested in, his wife leaves him, and he is left with his son’s custody. Chris Gardner is played by one of my favourite actors, Will Smith, and the son is also played by Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, so it shows the raw emotion of struggle and desperation. The actor played a major role in making this movie so emotional. I remember when I was 11, and I watched this movie with my mom, and I realised how much a good father would sacrifice for his son. What makes this movie so emotional is how he has to be strong for his son and not let him see his weakness, and also protect his innocence. This movie made me realise how difficult it is to be a father and how some of the kids are lucky to have a fathers who loves them and is ready to sacrifice for them. Will also recommend this movie if you want to have a cry fest. its a sad movie 3. A Dog’s Purpose Dogs are man’s best friend; how can there be a list of sad movies if it does not consist of movies about a dog? No one can say no to a cute dog, and no one wants to see a dog hurt, and here we are going to see a movie about a dog that goes through a reincarnation as many different dogs and finds its purpose. This movie shows a very genuine friendship between a dog and its owner, how dogs struggle in life also and how there are people who are cruel to animals, as the person who owns a dog. This movie hits closest to the heart movie showing a different life where the dog has to say goodbye to its owner; every lifetime dog has to overcome hardship, and difficulty is very emotional for me, seeing a fluffy, cute animal going through too much and saying goodbye every time is very hard to watch. The dogs in this movie are such good actors, a very raw and genuine display of love, and the dog narrating the whole movie was also a nice touch, and the side characters also gave depth to the story, even though the movie tells how there are people who are cruel to animals but it also tells us there are people who would do anything a animal would recommend this movie a very good 100% worth it to watch. top best sad movie 4. A Ghost Story This movie is kinda depressing, but it’s been shot very beautifully, and the way the story is told is also very unique. The story is about a man who has died and has come to see his wife in a state where he can’t communicate with her now; he is forced to watch his wife move on. It’s hard to watch the movie also shows us the raw feeling of loneliness and loss. It tells us that nothing lasts forever, and you have to accept your past and move on. When I started this movie, I found the ghost funny; he was not scary looking or threatening, just a white sheet with two cut-out eye holes, but when the movie ended, it stuck with me for days. It’s a very inventive and artful movie, and it also explores the topic of love and loss very deeply and truthfully. If you want to question your mortality and want to feel depressed, then it’s the go-to movie. The storytelling is poetic, unfolds slowly and stays with you even after the credits roll.
